Myotherapy and Exercise Prescription
What is Myotherapy?
Myotherapy is the evidence based assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal pain and associated conditions. Myotherapy and Remedial Massage are often confused, but are in fact two very different modalities with different aims and objectives. In common with Physiotherapists and Osteopaths, Myotherapists may use massage in their treatments when warranted, but are also able to call upon a wider range of other evidence based treatment approaches and skill sets such as Dry Needling, Thermo and Electro Therapeutic Techniques, Cupping, Kinesio and Rigid Taping, Joint Mobilisaton, Exercise Prescription, Pain Management Education, Load Management , Activity /Lifestyle Modification and Nutritional Advice.
What do Myotherapists Treat?
Myotherapists treat a range of musculoskeletal pain and associated conditions and dysfunctions, for example:
- Back Pain
- Neck and Shoulder Pain
- Headache and Jaw Pain
- Sports and Occupational Injuries
- Rotator Cuff Problems
- Achilles Tendinopathy and other ankle injuries
- Chronic Pain
- Tennis Elbow
You don’t need to be in pain to receive a Myotherapy Treatment. Aside from treating pain, treatment may focus on restoring optimal movement (rehabilitation) , removing the likelihood of further injury and dysfunction and keeping you performing at your best. Its also ideal for those that are thinking of jumping into exercise for the first time and need a good base of functional movement to start from or for those of you that simply feel you could be moving better. Every treatment is tailored to the individual depending on your needs.

What can I expect from a Myotherapy Treatment?
All Myotherapy clients are required to undertake an initial consultation. Here, a thorough client history is taken which will cover relevant matters such as activities, work and home environment, diet, medical history, presenting conditions, lifestyle, emotional and other contributing factors. The assessment may include:
- Functional Movement Screen
- Selective Functional Movement Assessment
- Range of Motion Testing
- Orthopedic Testing
- Postural Assessment
- Palpation
A treatment plan will then be formulated and explained to you. This will include manual therapy, exercise prescription including corrective exercise and stretching to be undertaken at home, as well as advice on management that can be undertaken between visits to best assist the improvement of your condition. For Myotherapy to succeed, it requires a strong commitment by the client to complete all take home exercise and modifications as prescribed by the therapist.
An initial consultation may take up to 90 minutes and in this time the client can expect to receive between 30 and 45 minutes of manual therapy/treatment.
A standard followup consultation may take up to 60minutes and will include a progress check, brief clinical assessment, approx. 30 minutes of treatment followed by exercise progressions.
A short consultation will take 30 minutes with 20 minutes of treatment time. Please note that you may be required to purchase a small number of items such as therabands and a foam roller in order to complete your take home exercise. Where possible, these will be available for purchase from the clinic.
